About This Program

What is it about sports that inspires such loyalty and camaraderie or, conversely, that provokes fans to take the contest outside the arena?

Our interdisciplinary Sport Studies concentration offers courses that delve into the cultural and institutional dimensions of sports, the role of media in sports, the interconnections between these facets, and the physical and physiological foundations of sports and athletics.

With the Sport Studies concentration, students can enrich various academic paths with a discipline-focused exploration of sports and athletics. This knowledge opens doors to careers in sports development, the health and fitness sector, coaching, or further academic pursuits.

Students completing the Sport Studies concentration will:

Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in the study of sport
Demonstrate an understanding of the contradictions of the phenomenon of sport
Develop a mastery of major concepts of a discipline-based approach to the study of sport
Apply discipline-based theories to the study of sport
Describe and critically analyze sport as a cultural, social, political and economic context for human interaction

The Sport Studies concentration requires that a student take three courses in a specific discipline, including the capstone. A minimum of 18 credit hours is required. Students must have a primary concentration in the College of Business or a major in the College of Arts and Sciences or School of Health and Behavioral Sciences.
